St. George Tri Race Report- Victor R

The St. George triathlon held on May 10. John and I had signed up forrnthis one last year, we made sure we were registered; this one sells outrnevery year. We headed out to colorful Southern Utah the Friday beforernto pick up our packet and check out the course. It was windy on Fridayrnand the weather man forecasted more wind for Saturday. He was right!!!rnJohn woke me up at 4am, (3am LV time). After several cups of coffee andrna bowl of cereal, we headed out to the venue to get our primo spot.

When we arrived (5:15am), nothing was set up yet. One of the volunteersrntold me that it had been windy all night and the park ranger had doubtsrnabout getting the event underway. The wind subsided a bit and we helpedrnthe volunteers set up the trans area. After we settled our gear, wernheaded back to the car to wait for the sun to come up!!! At race time,rn7am, miraculously, the wind had died down to a mere gentle breeze. Thernrace went on as scheduled.

The short distance athletes werernscheduled to start 40 minutes later. John was in the water, warmed-uprnand ready to go. The wind magically picks up and Brogg was forced torncancel the swim!!! What luck!……I was floundering in two-foot wavesrnbut managed not to get picked up by the barge which was almost full ofrnswimmers which were picked up half-way through their swim.

Itrnbecame a duathlon for those unfortunate people but, safety is first.rnThe event went on and no one was injured, everyone had a great time andrnsure enough, the wind died down!!! Notch another brilliant event forrnBrogg and his fine staff!!!rn
